Dear Boss: Bad attitude + less experience = higher pay?

Dec. 15, 2021
This month's Dear Boss submission involves a sticky subject: Finding out a woefully inadequate coworker makes more than you.

The Dental Office Manager Digest column “Dear Boss” is designed for office managers to be able to speak their minds by anonymously writing a “letter” to their boss. Send your letters to [email protected]. Depending on how many are received, your letter may take a while to appear in DOMD.

Dear Boss,

I am so annoyed and just want to quit!

After our recent hire resigned after five months, I found out that she had been making more money than me. She has a good amount of experience, but you only hired her as additional help. She ran the front desk for about four months, and I was training her on everything including dental insurance plans and how to submit claims, which tells me she had less experience than me. She would always challenge me and question certain things in the office. Before she left, she was very aggressive to the point that she started yelling over me. I would tell her constantly that she was there to learn not to question why things are done a certain way. Before she left, I told you I don't want to work in a hostile environment. She then apologized. The day after our spat, she resigned and told me she was taking a job that paid more money.

I'm so glad she quit. I have been in my position for 22 years, and I have to constantly push for an increase. Meanwhile, I find out that this girl had less experience than me and was making $3/hr more than I was. Sometimes I really wish you'd see the worth of your current employees, especially those who always have your back.

Sincerely,

On the Brink
