It’s time to get out there! In-person networking events a game-changer for dental assistants

Feb. 11, 2025
Nothing beats spending time with like-minded dental assisting professionals to boost your career outlook. Step out of the op to network and watch your enthusiasm grow.

As a dental assistant with more than 35 years of experience, I thought I’d seen it all. But let me tell you, attending three in-person networking events over the past three months completely shifted my perspective on professional growth and connection, especially in this post-COVID world.

After so many virtual meetings, the value of face-to-face interactions has never been more apparent. There's something undeniably powerful about stepping out of the operatory and into a room filled with passionate, like-minded professionals.

One of the most immediate benefits I experienced was the sheer energy of being surrounded by people who share the same dedication to dental health. Unlike virtual meetings, where connections can feel fleeting and distant, in-person events create an atmosphere that buzzes with enthusiasm. You can feel the enthusiasm in the room, see the excitement in people's eyes when they discuss new techniques, and experience the genuine warmth of a handshake or smile; simple gestures we once took for granted now hold much more meaning.

The value of in-person events

These events aren't just about exchanging business cards; they're about exchanging ideas. I had the chance to engage in spontaneous, meaningful conversations that simply didn't happen in structured online formats. Whether it was a quick chat over coffee about time-saving chairside methods or talking about the latest dental technologies, every interaction left me with fresh insights and practical takeaways that I could bring back to my team.

Another transformative aspect of in-person networking is the opportunity for personal and professional growth. Each event features inspiring speakers who share their journeys, challenges, and successes. Hearing their stories firsthand is incredibly motivating. It reminds me that no matter how long you've been in the field, there's always room to learn, grow, and evolve. Plus, participating in workshops and hands-on sessions allows me to refine my skills and even pick up a few new ones.

Networking face-to-face fosters stronger, more authentic relationships. It's easy to send a quick email or connect on LinkedIn, but nothing compares to the depth of connection you build when you share a laugh, story, or meal with someone. I met incredible individuals who would like to become collaborators and asked for mentorship, and we formed what will likely become great friendships. These relationships have enriched both my personal life and professional journey and have opened doors to opportunities I never expected.

Lastly, attending in-person events reignited my passion for dental assisting. While focusing on the daily grind, it's easy to feel disconnected from our professional purpose. But being in a space where people are excited about their work, sharing success stories and celebrating each other's achievements, reminded me why I love this profession. It’s not just about the clinical work; it's about being part of a dynamic, supportive community that strives to make a difference every day.

Stop wondering and attend an in-person event now!

If you're a dental assistant who’s wondering whether attending an in-person networking event is worth your time, I can confidently say “Yes, it is absolutely worth it.” The connections you make, the knowledge you gain, and the inspiration you carry back with you are invaluable. Step out of your comfort zone, attend that conference or local meeting, and experience the transformative power of networking. You won't regret it.
