Chairside Connection: Back-to-school tips for dental students

Aug. 8, 2024
Dr. Mark Hyman shares advice to help dental students not only survive, but thrive as they start the new year. Be thinkers, be communicators, and love what you do.

Dr. Mark Hyman is passionate about helping dental students start their new year off right. He hopes they don't experience the “militaristic” atmosphere that he did in dental school, and that’s part of the reason he teaches at UNC Adams School of Dentistry.

He wants them to realize how much fun it can be to run a practice, manage a team, and hang out with the leaders in dentistry.

What will help dentists be successful both in and out of the classroom? Dr. Hyman hopes dental students strive to be thinkers. He encourages them to be creative, to be problem solvers, to have balance in their lives, and to be terrific communicators. Dentistry is a relationship profession. You have to be honest and develop great relationships with patients, your team, your peers, and even company reps.

Organized dentistry is there to support students and dentists. Becoming acquainted with peers is an important part of this profession. As a Philips KOL, Dr. Hyman speaks highly of their tools and the relationship he’s developed with the company, and explains what the company offers dentists and patients.
