DDS Services receives FDA clearance for DDS-ZR
DDS Services, Inc. has announced that it has received clearance by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to market its new, high performance Zirconia for use as an alternative to metal copings and bridges. Zirconia, known for its exceptional strength and biocompatibility, has historically been used in hip replacement technology.
DDS Services' new material, called DDS-ZR is derived from YTZP (Yttria Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals), a family of high performance ceramics, which has been used in hip replacement technologies for more than 15 years. Because DDS-ZR is so strong, the material can be used in a thinner form, giving it an aesthetically pleasing, natural appearance when used for dental restorations.
"We are excited about this new material and CDM services business model and believe it will change the business of metal free dental restoration in a very positive way," said Chris Scharf, company spokesperson. "DDS-ZR leads the way to a more metal free world in dentistry by offering strength, aesthetics, fit, and biocompatibility like never before. The best part is that not only are dental professionals able to provide a high quality product, but patients can have an exceptional experience by getting a great fit the first time and a natural looking, long lasting restoration."
DDS-ZR makes up the foundation of a crown, commonly known as a coping and its color and texture blend with the natural teeth. The two parts of the crown are the foundation and the porcelain surface which gives the restoration the look of a natural tooth. With DDS-ZR, there is no need for the metal foundations that have been used in the past and the result is natural looking. DDS-ZR can also be used for other dental restorations and veneers.
Traditionally, metal free dental product offerings required more thickness to provide enough strength to last and thereby limited the amount of porcelain that could be used in restorations. As a result, the aesthetic qualities of such restorations were compromised.
A highly accurate 3D image is taken of the local area being restored and is used for a customized replacement. DDS-ZR replacements are custom machined to fit each patient individually, reducing rework time by dental professionals and time in the chair for the patient. DDS-ZR is computer machined in a controlled environment that gives a more accurate and reliable finished product versus traditional dental CAD/CAM techniques.
