CHICAGO — Launching with national online sales of its biodegradable bamboo toothbrush, Smiles for the People, LLC is a new kind of dental company. For every item purchased, Smiles for the People donates the equivalent of one toothbrush to someone in need.
Founded by Joe Brennan, a 22-year-old entrepreneur and humanitarian, Smiles for the People exists to improve the oral health of those who cannot access or afford the dentist. The company believes that the power of a healthy smile can help lead to opportunity and prosperity for the poor.

Brennan says, "Our name, Smiles for the People, is a rallying cry and call to action. It demands that each of us stand up and fight for the right of all people to smile, regardless of whether they can afford a dentist or a toothbrush. When you purchase a Smiles for the People toothbrush, you take part in a movement to empower the world's most vulnerable people with the simple expression of a smile."
By developing long-term relationships with dental charities, Smiles for the People hopes to turn consumers' everyday purchases into extraordinary acts of generosity. Todos Juntos, a registered dental charity and the company's first "Giving Partner," provides dental care for more than 7,000 children every year living in the poverty stricken communities of Buenos Aires. Smiles for the People will help Todos Juntos strengthen and continue this important work by donating the equivalent of one toothbrush for every item sold.
The company's original adult brush is made from bamboo and has a 100% biodegradable handle. Each brush is sold for $5.95, and when ordering in bulk, dentists can receive discounts of almost 20%. In addition, the company offers a 12-month subscription of its original adult brush for $5.15 per brush. Finally, every shipment is carbon neutral and supports the development of renewable energy.
