Dr. Glazer reviews: Bien-Air handpieces and FujiCEM Evolve cement

July 7, 2020
Howard S. Glazer, DDS, FAGD, author of the popular “I have it—You want it!” column in Dental Economics, shares reviews of products that have the potential to benefit your dental practice during the pandemic and beyond.

Bien-Air Turbines & Electric Handpieces

Using air-driven or electric handpieces is routine in any dental practice, but in the midst of COVID-19, this type of equipment raises concerns over aerosols and splatter. Certainly, these are two key factors when it comes to preventing the spread of the virus, and

Bien-Air has stepped forward to offer a solution to prevent cross-contamination when using such handpieces. Bien-Air’s unique, anti-retraction valve is built into the handpiece, not the coupler. This means that when either type of handpiece is sterilized, the possibility of cross-contamination via the coupling device is eliminated. The anti-retraction device is simply a one-way valve that opens when pressure is applied to the foot control and closes when pressure is taken away. There is no fluid retraction from the oral cavity into the handpiece. One further advantage of Bien-Air’s electric handpiece line is the ability to reduce the amount of water needed for mechanical cooling when cutting tooth structure due to the sealed ceramic head. Be sure to check out the BORA and Tornado air-driven handpiece line as well as the Optima MX and MX2 line of electric handpieces. All options provide maximum safety while eliminating the risk of cross-contamination.

FujiCEM Evolve from GC America

Eighteen years ago, GC introduced FujiCEM®; nine years later, FujiCEM® 2 was launched. Now, allow me to introduce you to

GC’s FujiCEM® Evolve with its new syringe delivery system with a new “push and click” tip that allows for either hand-mixing or auto-mixing. While this cement is optimized for Zirconia, it can be used with a variety of substrates. At a time when it’s so important to minimize office visits, we need a cement that holds the restoration, is easy to clean up, and has high radiopacity and a rechargeable fluoride release. This product has a new three-second “tack cure” due to a new photo initiator, and is ideal for Zirconia bridges and crowns. This material is also great for bonding fiber, metal, or ceramic posts. Demonstrated bond strengths and durability are quite high, and it is particularly strong and stable when bonding Zirconia due to excellent “wet-ability” because of its hydrophilic monomer chain and the interaction between polyacrylic acid and Zirconia with low expansion. Reliability and a history of success make FujiCEM® Evolve an excellent selection.
