Arizona dentist creates innovation for cancer and dry mouth patients

Nov. 13, 2013

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer, of any kind, is life changing. Where do you go for help? What treatments should you pursue? What are the side effects? These are all life-altering decisions made by cancer patients and their families on a daily basis.

One of the most serious side effects of radiation therapy is dry mouth, a condition associated with Xerostomia. Most people would think drinking water or rinsing with a specially formulated mouthwash would help with dry mouth, but it doesn’t. This is a debilitating burning sensation to the mouth, tongue, and throat. It also can cause cavities, bad breath, and overall destruction of the teeth, gums, and taste buds. It often leaves the person unable to speak normally. The most common cause of dry mouth is medications and other diseases affecting over one billion people worldwide, up to 30% of women, and 50% of seniors. There had to be an effective solution. Dentist, Dr. Brian Midei, or “Dr. B,” was determined to find it.

Time to innovate
Dr. B joined forces with a company with patents on infusing functional ingredients into toothpicks, one of the world’s most effective, and favorite, dental devices. The innovative toothpicks not only remove plaque, but also are infused with mouth-watering flavors that stimulate salivation. This is a breakthrough for those that suffer from dry mouth.

The key ingredient in the sticks is Spilanthes, a flavoring ingredient that has been used as a remedy for toothaches and inflammation in the mouth for centuries.

Three significant realizations happened during his research:
1. The sticks never lost their flavor. One stick could be used for hours, and still release flavor. The mouth-watering flavoring agent, Spilanthes, would create the “ever-lasting gobstopper of salivation.” The delivery device was convenient, fun, and easy to use.

2. After constant testing of the acid in his own mouth, Dr. B. became obsessed with figuring out ways to neutralize and control the acid that causes cavities.

3. XERO STICKS were given to cancer patients who lost hope from extreme dry mouth, and who could not live a comfortable life due to the radiation treatments. These sticks had positive life-changing results for these patients. Dr. B. knew he had co-invented an effective product that could change lives, and be a breakthrough for the dental profession.
