2017 RDH eVillage Annual Salary Survey, part 3: Raises for part-time vs. full-time dental hygienists
Dental hygienists who work full time are more likely to have earned a raise within the last year than their part-time counterparts, according to the 2017 RDH eVillage Annual Salary Survey.
In many of the states profiled below, a greater percentage of full-time dental hygienists are more likely to be granted a pay raise, as well as possibly earn a bit more per hour than their part-time counterparts.
Overall, 2,108 dental hygienists participated in the survey. Only 636 (31%) received a raise within the last year. From a national perspective, 44% of the respondents work less than 29 hours a week, and 54% of dental hygienists work more than 30 hours a week.
RDH eVillage certainly heard from the 17% who indicated that they have not received a raise in more than five years.
A 52-year veteran from California said, “I will practice dental hygiene as long as my brain, hands, and body stay strong. I love dental hygiene. I love every day, but dental hygiene has not loved me back.”

Another California respondent asked simply, “Are hygienists receiving raises in Orange County, California?” We don’t know about Orange County, but we do know that seven of 48 dental hygienists in Los Angeles metropolitan area got a raise within the last year.
In Washington state, a hygienist commented, “My doctor said he doesn't give raises because he doesn't get a raise with the higher cost of supplies and lower insurance reimbursement. We had a week of vacation taken away from us, and he owes the employees for a simple IRA where money was taken out of our checks but never sent to the investment company.”
A New Hampshire dental hygienist said improving skill sets hasn’t helped, reporting, “It's been nine years since my last raise. I have been practicing 15 years. It's very frustrating in that during the last nine years I have gone back for my bachelor's degree and received my certification for local anesthesia and nitrous oxide. I still make the exact same as I did nine years ago.”
The states profiled below generally include states that offered at least 22–25 responses to offer a clearer understanding of full-time vs. part-time trends.
