Observation: Pennsylvania dental hygienists match the national averages in believing it is difficult to find employment. A minor point, when comparing the state with others, is that the percentages of those who believe it is “easy” to find work are slightly above national averages.

Length of time since last pay raise in Pennsylvania

Observation: Pennsylvania hygienists who received a raise within the last year compare very favorably with in-state peers as well as against the national average.

Most common hourly pay rates in Pennsylvania

$24, $35, $36, and $37

Observation: Responses from hygienists in the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia areas represent 48% of the responses within the entire state. So those two urban areas likely influence the range depicted above. $40 of Pennsylvania hygienists earn income based on hourly rates between $35 and $37.

Descriptions of pay arrangements based on production or commission

  • I get a commission check the 10th of every month. I get 15% of my production that's collected.
  • I receive my hourly rate plus commission bonuses for periodontal procedures, products sold, and treatment I recommend that gets completed by the doctors.
  • 30% commission on total billing, including exam fee. Average $60 to $65 an hour.
  • I earn $12 per prophy, $16 for FMX, $8 for 4 BWX, $25 per quad of deep scaling, $7 for fluoride
