Let’s face the facts . . . we have all completely screwed up something at one point in our lives. We have botched something simple, tripped over our own two feet, or made fools of ourselves by completely and utterly messing up.

I've heard some great stories through the years from dental assistants who have made a big mistake (or two or three or four or . . .), learned something from it, and come out better on the other side. It’s part of who we are as human beings. We’re going to make mistakes. But how are we going to cope with those mistakes and make sure they don’t happen again? That’s the key.

Truman Capote said, “Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor.” We can not only learn when we mess up, but we can also help others to not make the same mistakes we did.

With that in mind, I’m introducing something new on IgniteDA and in Dental Assisting Digest. It’s a series of articles and talks on “Dental Assistant Fails.” We’re going to hear from some of the best and brightest dental assistants out there about the moments they failed, what they learned from those moments, and what they want you to learn from their mistakes.

We’re going to make this raw, honest, and a game-changer for dental assistants. Your colleagues are going to open up about some of their toughest moments. They’re going to share with you how you don’t need to make the same mistakes, and how you can learn from their “oops” moments. We’re also going to ask you to share (anonymously, if you wish) your not-so-great moments in your career and the lessons you would pass along from those.

At IgniteDA, we always say, “Together We Rise.” This is a perfect example of what we mean by that. Let’s work together to make sure assistants learn from assistants, even from their not-made-for-social-media moments.

Speaking of social media, we will be using the hashtag #DentalAssistantFails to share these on Twitter and Instagram, so be watching! We will also be sharing on DentistryIQ and the IgniteDA Facebook page.

Brene Brown once said, “Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.” That’s what this series is all about. Let’s work together to help each other, and maybe have some fun while we’re doing it.

Please just take a few minutes to click here and explain your fail.
