As the voice of women dentists around the globe, the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) and PennWell Corporation are proud to introduce the Woman Dentist Journal (WDJ) to serve your needs! The official publication of AAWD, WDJ will be published every other month in 2003.

This is a historic time in our profession, with more than 25,000 women dentists ... and that number is growing. As an estimated 6,000 dentists retire each year, 4,000 dentists graduate, nearly half of whom are women. With an anticipated shortfall of dentists in the next decade, women are the future of dentistry!

For more than 82 years, AAWD has been serving women dentists. A best-kept secret is that most of today's female dental leaders and speakers honed their leadership skills within the AAWD. Now the secret is out with this first edition of WDJ. We will provide you with keys to leadership development, mentoring, networking, collaboration ... and fun!

This publication is about and for you! Women comprise 7 percent of the leadership in most dental organizations. Seven of the deans in the 55 dental schools are women, as are 42 percent of freshman dental students. Connections and mentoring among women are essential for today's and tomorrow's world of dentistry. A key part of the WDJ audience is the woman dentist who has been in practice fewer than five years and is juggling commitments.

WDJ seeks to create, strengthen, and support the web of connections for women dentists. Our goals are to provide you with practical tools, to focus on the art and science of dentistry, and to address personal balance. Through our outstanding editorial board, WDJ provides technology transfer on emerging scientific issues, reviews, and resources on practice and team management. Included are critical partnerships for success — with the entire dental team, the laboratory, dental suppliers, and manufacturers.

Each month, WDJ will focus on one main topic. This month we chose women's health because of the landmark Institute of Medicine report, "Does Sex Matter? Exploring the Biologic Differences in Health" (www.iom.gov) and recent government studies citing deficiencies in dental school curriculum compared to medical and nursing schools.

Like my now-grown children, I expect this publication to grow in new, exciting, and unexpected ways — but always to be better! To serve your needs, please let us hear from you at [email protected]. Happy New Year!
