Anesthesia-free dentistry gets even easier: Convergent Dental unveils Solea 3.0
Company unveils first all-tissue laser with a single setting at CDA Presents: Anaheim 2016
Earlier this month, Convergent Dental Inc. (Natick, Massachusetts) announced the release of Solea 3.0, new software for the Solea laser that significantly enhances the device's performance and usability. The timing of the announcement coincided with the start of the CDA Presents: Anaheim 2016 dental meeting.
With the Solea laser, software is everything, as it controls the properties of the laser. The latest software upgrade simplifies the all-tissue dental laser’s workflow. The laser can now cut any tissue without the dentist changing any settings, while approaching near-100% anesthesia-free and blood-free performance.
As with all upgrades to the laser, Solea dentists receive Solea 3.0 free from the company. The update is delivered automatically over Wi-Fi as a part of Solea dentists' service contracts.
The simplified workflow is as follows: Dentists turn Solea on, direct the beam at the desired tissue, and step on the variable speed foot pedal. Dentists press softer on the foot pedal for softer tissues and press harder on the foot pedal for harder tissues.
The one-setting-fits-all approach works for tooth structure, bone, and soft tissue, and it enables dentists to reliably perform anesthesia-free, blood-free, suture-free, and pain-free procedures.

“When we introduced Solea, we changed the paradigm,” says Convergent Dental CEO Michael Cataldo. “Now, with Solea 3.0, we’ve changed it again by designing software so simple every dentist can be a laser dentist. Solea 3.0 is like a car with an automatic transmission—you simply turn it on, step on the pedal, and go.”
Cataldo added that the laser now cuts two-and-a-half times faster, based on mass removal rate comparison with previous software, and five times smoother on enamel.
“Anesthesia-free and blood-free procedures are now well within reach for any dentist,” Cataldo says.
Cataldo also cited a report that found Solea 3.0 is approaching 100% anesthesia-free for 100% of cavity preps, regardless of enamel thickness or the depth of the preparation. The report is based on a survey of 150 Solea dentists over a one-month period.
