Competitive awards, up to $75,000, will be provided to recipients to advance oral care programs directed toward the development of innovative and novel compounds, biomaterials, or devices that can be used ultimately at the public health level.

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSK) announce the 2005 Innovation in Oral Care Awards. Competitive awards, up to $75,000, will be provided to recipients to advance oral care programs directed toward the development of innovative and novel compounds, biomaterials, or devices that can be used ultimately at the public health level. The awards will be funded by GSK and administered by the IADR. A Review Board of internationally recognized experts, under the chairmanship of Dr. John Stamm, Dean, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, will review all eligible proposals.

These innovation awards offer opportunities for investigators to conduct dental research with a direct impact on the oral health of the public and are intended to inspire innovative and novel research in oral care, above and beyond the bounds of "traditional" dental research.

"The IADR is extremely grateful for the generosity of GlaxoSmithKline in supporting oral care research," said Dr. Paul B. Robertson, President of the IADR, "and we look forward to the exciting innovations that will result from these awards and their impact on health. For the 2004 awards, we received an overwhelming number of proposals, indicating that innovation is alive and well in the dental research community."

"GSK is very proud to sponsor the IADR/GSK Innovation in Oral Care Awards," said Jack Ziegler, President, GSK Consumer Healthcare. "Innovative oral care products are absolutely key to improving oral health."

"The IADR/GSK Innovation in Oral Care Awards closely match the core mission of the IADR, which is to advance research and increase knowledge for the improvement of oral health worldwide," said Dr. Christopher H. Fox, Executive Director of the IADR, "and the IADR congratulates GSK for its corporate leadership in this regard."

All proposals must be submitted online at www.dentalresearch.org. Proposals are due October 31, 2004, and awards will be made in March, 2005, at the 83rd General Session of the IADR to be held in Baltimore, MD, USA. Full details, including an application form, will be available on the Web site beginning September 1, 2004.
