Human resources questions: requirements for I-9 forms in a paperless dental practice
Question: I prefer to be as "paperless" as possible. Can I shred my I-9 forms if I have scanned them and saved them electronically?
Answer: Yes. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) advises that you may choose to fill out a paper form I-9 and scan and upload the original signed form to retain it electronically. Once you have securely stored the form in electronic format, you may destroy the paper copy. You also have the option of being completely "paperless" by completing the forms electronically using an electronic signature. USCIS offers a Handbook for Employers that addresses all I-9-related issues.
