Is it time to fire your dental lab?

Dec. 18, 2023
Are you unhappy with your dental lab? Do you feel like you give at the highest level, but what you get back is only subpar? Maybe it’s time to fire your lab. But do these things first.
David R. Rice, DDS, Chief editor

When you’re doing everything at the highest level and you’re not getting the same back from your lab, it may be time to say goodbye.

But here’s what I’d do first:

  1. Sit down with your lab and exchange expectations. Looking back, were you clear on what you expected? Was your lab clear on what they expected from you?
  2. Make sure you’re communicating—not just when the #!@x hits the fan—but regularly and proactively about what’s going well and what needs improvement. For example, if the contacts are always high, let your lab know. It’s often a simple fix. If the contacts are light, same. Talk to your lab.
  3. Make sure you’re holding up your end of the bargain: send nice preps, crisp scans/impressions, and clear instructions that your lab can read and understand.
