Celebrate With a Sparkling New Smile From the AACD
July 3, 2001 Madison, WI -- Numbers always tell the truth, and this holds true for the value Americans place on their smiles. A recent survey of U.S. adults by the AACD found that 92% of respondents believe an attractive smile is an important social asset, and 87% said they always remember someone with an especially attractive smile. In terms of personal and professional fulfillment, 85% of those surveyed said an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to people of the opposite sex, and 74% felt an unattractive smile can hurt a person's chances for career success. Yet, despite the value Americans place on the value of a smile, only 50% are satisfied with the appearance of their own smiles!
"A smile is not only a reflection of a person's oral health, but of their self-esteem and passion for life," commented Arthur Chal, DDS, of Phoenix, Ariz., president of AACD.
Americans have many options when exploring the benefits of cosmetic dentistry, including:
* Bleaching -- whiten yellowed or discolored teeth
* Veneers -- thin porcelain or resin laminates affixed to worn teeth
* Crowns -- 'cap' over broken or severely damaged teeth
* Tooth-colored fillings -- replace unsightly metal fillings with tooth-like materials
