New nonlatex dental dam is highly tear-resistant

Coltène/Whaledent Inc. introduces the Hygienic Flexidam nonlatex dental dam. It has an elastic elongation that is nine times its original length. This high level of elasticity means an extreme resistance to tearing and punctures from bur and instrument contact.

The high elasticity assures the clinician of a tight fit around the preparation for moisture control and effective isolation. In fact, a smaller punch hole than is used with latex dam is recommended for an exceptionally tight fit. In addition, Hygienic Flexidam can be used on sensitive patients without fear of a latex reaction. It is powder-free, odorless, and available in a 6" x 6" nonreflective violet color.

For more information, call your dealer, or Coltène/Whaledent at (800) 221-3046, ext. 8198, or visit www.coltenewhaledent.com.

CEREC® 3D adds a new dimension

CEREC®, from Sirona, is taking in-operatory restorative control to a new dimension with the introduction of its new operating system, CEREC 3D. The new and intuitive software allows CEREC 3 users to view, manipulate, change, and verify all aspects of the restoration design before it is milled, providing dentists with complete confidence in an ideal marginal fit.

The user-friendly CEREC 3D provides a full 360-degree perspective, putting dentists virtually in the patient's mouth, allowing them to design restorations with such accuracy that it practically eliminates the need for time-consuming and difficult adjustments after placement. The dentist can design custom-milled inlays, onlays, crowns, and veneers with complete confidence by making precise edits to all facets of the restoration down to the micron — before it's milled.

With a new automatic margin detector maximizing occlusal control, and a realistic display of the restoration and prep together, three-dimensional realism makes designing the restoration easy. In addition, CEREC 3D expands on quadrant dentistry, allowing dentists to design multiple teeth while one is being produced.

With a proven track record, backed by more than 100 clinical studies, the CEREC system has allowed dentists to provide single-visit, all-ceramic restorations for more than 15 years — with more than six million restorations placed worldwide.

Early caries detection in easy-to-use syringes

Pulpdent Corporation's SNOOP, a propylene glycol-based caries detector used for identifying infected carious dentin, is now available in syringes. This delivery method allows for direct application using flocked applicator tips. SNOOP's propylene glycol formula has been shown to be more accurate than water-based formulas, while its dark-blue color provides a strong contrast with both dentin and the pulp.

SNOOP can detect caries in difficult-to-see areas, and enables the dentist to perform a conservative cavity preparation, removing only the outer infected dentin. Used early in the cavity procedure, SNOOP makes it possible to avoid removing too much tooth structure.

SNOOP was rated four stars by REALITY and is available through dental dealers in 12 ml bottles and in two 2.5 gm syringes with 20 applicator tips. For more information, call (800) 343-4342 or visit www.pulpdent.com.

New dental ID system for children

Toothprints® is a thermoplastic wafer that softens in hot water and is taken in the same manner as a bite registration. It records children's individual tooth characteristics, tooth position within the arch, and the upper-to-lower jaw relationship — all important information for identification. An unrinsed Toothprints also captures saliva, a powerful source of human scent, making Toothprints effective for scent-dog tracking. In addition, sufficient saliva proteins remain from which DNA can be garnered for another means of identification. Parents keep the Toothprints record themselves for confidentiality and quick access.

Kerr offers Toothprints at a minimal cost so it can be offered at an affordable price or even on a complimentary basis. Kerr also offers a display and patient brochure covering important safety information and what to do in case a child goes missing.

For more information, contact your Kerr dealer or call (800)-KERR123 (537-7123).

On-site automatic silver recovery

Medical Innovations, Inc., announces independence from hazardous waste-hauling headaches and their on-going costs and paperwork. Your X-ray processor presents a liability involving the lifecycle of silver as an environmental threat. It is your ongoing responsibility to dispose of this waste and provide documentation in acc-ordance with state and common laws.

The good news about the silver regulations is that the silver "problem" can end — underneath the counter where your processor sits — with this on-site fixer machine. The automatic metering pump slowly pumps fixer through the recovery canister for maximum efficiency — 99.9 percent. When the long-life filters are full, simply ship it to the manufacturer via USPS or any common carrier — no liquid hazards or mess. Cost savings for small and large practices can range up to 75 percent per year. It is compact, made of tough and seamless HDPE plastic, and offers an unequivocal number of advantages over medical-waste carriers.

GC Occlusal Matrix System

GC America is proud to launch the GC Occlusal Matrix System, a specially designed disposable tool that aids in speedily achieving the perfect occlusal surface with all restorative materials — self-curing and light-curing glass ionomers and composites.

How to use the Occlusal Matrix System — Simply fill the cavity with the preferred restorative material, place the GC Occlusal Matrix onto the surface and have the patient occlude, clenching the teeth. The result is a perfectly contoured occlusal surface with ample time for finishing.

The Occlusal Matrix contains 50 pieces — 25 left and 25 right. The system also allows multiple restorations in different parts of the mouth. Simply connect the handles of a male (left) and female (right) matrix together and adjust the shape to accommodate four different sizes of full arches.

New composite carriers from Cosmedent®

Cosmedent® introduces a new line of composite carriers that allow for easy placement of material in Class I, II, and III restorations. These are ideal instruments to use for the delivery of all composites to the cavity preparation, and are available in three sizes (S, M, L) to ensure that you dispense exactly the right amount of material.

Today's stiffer composites are much easier to dispense with these instruments, eliminating the inconvenience of working with unwieldy dispensing guns that require enormous strength to use. Also, using the composite carriers will save you money, because there is no wasted material as there can be when working with compules. The detachable plastic barrels can be sterilized both by autoclave and cold-sterilizing solution.
