A Letter From Your Editor

I hope that this issue of Woman Dentist Journal/"Chronicle" finds you all well and very involved in AAWD.

I hope that this issue of Woman Dentist Journal/"Chronicle" finds you all well and very involved in AAWD. It is a wonderful organization that is tailor-made. If you are not a member, run U don't walk (it is as easy as clicking a button or sending a fax) ... to become one. It is a decision you will never regret.

I am writing to let you know that I AM OK. I wrote an article about heart health in the February issue of the "Chronicle." I had an abnormal EKG one year after having had a "normal" one. I was experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath. I went to my cardiologist (I say that like I say "my lawyer," but I really didn't have one until now) and was told I needed a full cardiac screening. But I didn't follow through. A year later, here I was. I was informed of my abnormal EKG and was told that I had a heart murmur. All this was news to me. My doctor scheduled me for a stress test with nuclear meds and an echocardiogram.

The echocardiogram indicated that I have mitral valve prolapse with slight regurgitation. After scheduling my stress test, I found out I was pregnant after three-and-a-half years of trying. (I had finally given up, but it happened! I just look up to the skies and think, He really has a funny sense of humor, and I thank HIM!) So ... no nuclear meds for Martita! Next, I undergo the stress test without the meds, which is 70 to 75 percent accurate, they say. OK, I am having a hard time, but they don't call me a wimp to my face! I pass my test with no studying whatsoever. I am painfully aware of how out of shape I am, however, and I am going to get on that as soon as this morning/afternoon/night sickness lets up! I am proud of myself for going ahead with the checkups. I have had some weird chest episodes since, but we are on it and I have a physician I can trust. He is going to recheck me at 32 weeks of pregnancy to make sure that my MVP has not progressed.

I want to thank all of you who prayed for me, worried about me, and emailed me. You are all wonderful! That is part of what makes AAWD great. I can share a personal story with you and even if I have not met you yet, I feel a certain sisterhood with you. Thank you for your support and contributions to both Woman Dentist Journal and the "Chronicle." They are only as good as your contributions and involvement. I love getting my magazine, and my hat is OFF to Margaret, Lori, and, last but certainly not least, Vicki Cheeseman, without whom there would be ... NOTHING. There are countless other folks to thank — our wonderful president, Dr. Jean Furuyama, and our dynamic slate of officers. You all are an inspiration.

Have a wonderful spring and come August 5, I will share my news. I am excited to bring my second child into the world after grappling with fertility woes. If I can be of any service to any of you, or if you have a contribution or suggestion for the "Chronicle," email me at [email protected].

Lots of love and well wishes for a happy and colorful spring,
Martha
