Chairside Connection: Connecting your patients' visits to their overall health

Jan. 16, 2024
Dr. Tim Donley knew dentistry would change forever when he first read, more than 20 years ago, that heart and oral health were linked. Here's what he tells his patients.

Back by popular demand, I had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Tim Donley recently. He's always full of insightful advice.

When he read more than 20 years ago about oral health being related to heart health, he knew it would change the trajectory of dentistry. He doesn’t want dentists to sell themselves short. We're very important players in our patients' health, and we need to share that with our patients. Dr. Donley said he doesn't want us to be the oral health police, but we have the responsibility to take a different approach in order to disrupt the narrative of dentistry.

How does he approach sharing the oral-systemic link with patients? He says the message is that  inflammation is bad in any part of the body, including the mouth. His office strives to customize treatment chairside, depending on what a patient is experiencing. If someone has a medical condition, it’s more important than ever to keep their mouth inflammation-free. What tools do they need to make this happen? That's where Philips products play a role in Dr. Donley's practice.

Listen to my discussion with Dr. Donley to learn some applicable ideas for your practice.
