CHICAGO, Illinois--School oral health care programs get a $5,000 boost from Northeast Delta Dental Foundation through a grant to Oral Health America.

Some of the sites funded are the Aroostook County Action Program—Community Oral Health Education, City of Portland—Children’s Oral Health Program, and the Washington County Children’s Program of Maine—School Oral Health Program.

“We are thrilled that Maine school-based oral health programs are able to increase their outreach to keep children free of tooth decay, which is almost entirely preventable,” said Amanda Ciatti, Oral Health America’s programs manager. “Northeast Delta Dental’s grant brings regional backing to a national program increasing oral disease prevention services to children without routine access to a dentist.”

Tooth decays remains the No. 1 unmet childhood disease in the county, and Maine is no exception. A recent public opinion survey commissioned by Oral Health America found that 17% of parents with school-aged children reported that their child had missed at least one day of school due to dental related pain or illness.

“The Northeast Delta Dental Foundation has been awarding grants directly to Maine oral health programs since 1995,” said the foundation’s secretary and assistant treasurer, Betty Andrews.

"We welcomed the opportunity to award another grant to support Smiles Across America’s work in Maine to provide needed services to children."

Oral Health America’s mission is to change lives by connecting communities with resources to increase access to care, education, and advocacy for all Americas especially those most vulnerable.
