A Rhode Island dentist, Paul Boscia, was ordered by the Rhode Island Department of Health to stop performing root canals. An investigation was launched by the Department of Health following complaints received in July 2012 and August 2013.
The investigation found that Boscia, among other things, made inaccurate diagnoses or even failed to make diagnoses altogether; performed substandard root canals; did not communicate root canal outcomes when those outcomes could compromise patients' prognosis; and failed to keep complete records, including the charting of existing conditions and periodontal disease.
Boscia will not be allowed to perform root canals again until he has completed university courses in proper root canal therapy, diagnosis, record keeping, and treatment planning.
