With lasers rapidly replacing the patient-dreaded "shot and drill" in dentistry, and becoming the gold standard of technology used by dentists at the forefront of their profession, Eugene L. Antenucci, DDS, of Huntington Bay Dental, and the Suffolk County Dental Society are co-sponsoring a hands-on and didactic training seminar for dentists seeking to integrate the use of the advanced technology into their practices.
Dr. Antenucci -- a highly accomplished dentist, well-known for spearheading the use of dental lasers in the Long Island region -- has been selected to conduct the day-long educational session in his offices at 222 East Main Street, Huntington, N.Y., on Wednesday, November 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Billed as Symphony of Light, The Definitive Dental Laser Educational Experience by OpusDent, the world's leading manufacturer of dental lasers and light-based medical technologies, the program includes a half-day lecture by Dr. Antenucci on the fundamentals of laser dentistry. He will explain how different laser wavelengths are used to provide optimal dentistry and address a host of other issues, including the impact of lasers on operative cosmetics, surgery, periodontics and endodontics. During the second half of the day, he will demonstrate -- and course participants will practice -- techniques using lasers for both hard and soft tissue procedures. Upon completing the course, they will receive six Continuing Education Credits administered through the New York State Dental Association and the New York State Academy of General Dentistry.
"Huntington Bay Dental has become a center of excellence not only for patient care, but also for advanced dental training," says Dr. Antenucci. "Lasers are revolutionizing the way we practice dentistry. We're not only using them in our practice daily, we're also teaching the techniques to other dentists because our level of expertise is very highly developed."
Considered safe and effective by the FDA if used by qualified dentists, lasers are an exciting innovation in the practice of dentistry. Minimally invasive tools, they utilize light beams to slice painlessly through gum, tooth and bone, allowing dentists to remove unhealthy tissue rapidly and conserve as much healthy tissue as possible.
A family of instruments used in a wide range of procedures on soft and hard oral tissue, lasers can be used to treat gum disease; reshape gums; treat painful lesions, such as canker sores; and effectively dispose of tooth decay in order to prepare the surrounding enamel for a new, strong filling.
With lasers there is a reduced need for anesthesia, which allows dentists to work in several areas during a single visit; bleeding is minimized; healing is faster; the risk of infection is reduced; swelling is controlled; and there is usually little, if any, post-operative discomfort.
What's more, lasers are quiet. There is little or no sound or vibration associated with laser treatment -- a pleasant treat for dental patients who have had to tolerate the ear-splitting whine and pressure of the dental drill.
"Pain-free and shorter chair time are extraordinary benefits of using lasers," explains Dr. Antenucci. "Lasers are the future of dentistry. Someday, every dental practice will use them. But, for us, the future is now."
