Creating Beauty and Fun at the AAWD Interim Meeting in San Francisco
If you were in San Francisco for the ADA meeting Oct. 24-25, and didn't stop by the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, you missed a great meeting put on by the American Association of Women Dentists — "Creating Beauty for Our Patients and Ourselves" — and the installation of the 2004 AAWD Board of Directors.
We started off with a bang — AAWD members know how to party — at the installation of the Board of Directors Friday night. We welcomed our many guests, families, and sponsors who came to thank our 2003 officers for their time and commitment and welcome the 2004 officers. Included among the honored guests were Dr. & Mrs. John Chandler, president of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD); Dr. Thomas Howley, president-elect of the AGD; Dr. Joy Jordan, president of the National Dental Association; Dr. Lilia Larin, Hispanic Dental Association Board of Trustees representative; Kay Mosley, CDA, president of the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA); and Mr. Larry Sepin, executive director of the ADAA. Dr. Margaret Scarlett did the honors of installing, in her own special way, the 2004 AAWD Executive Board: Dr. Jean Furuyama, president; Dr. Risé Lyman, immediate past president; Dr. Cissy Furusho, president-elect; Dr. Sandra Harris, vice president; Dr. Lanette Sikes, secretary; Dr. Lilia Larin, treasurer; and Dr. Martha Anne Carr, editor of the Chronicle. We welcomed Dr. Lori Trost as the new managing editor of Woman Dentist Journal. Dr. Margaret Scarlett stepped down as WDJ editor to pursue other endeavors, among which is staying on as the science and women's health editor of WDJ. We thank her for her commitment and endless hours of work.
This year's Board of Directors includes Dr. Wendy Hupp, Dr. Judith Belitz, Dr. Natasha Kuiper, Dr. Kate Hakala, Dr. Mary Jo Corbett, Dr. Mary Beth Aichelmann-Reidy, Dr. Mary Martin, Dr. Glenda Nuckols, Dr. Judith Porter, Dr. Trucia Drummond, and Dr. Risé Lyman. Our student trustees — Leena Bitar from Tufts University and Sara Sackfield from the University of Iowa — were also present at the meeting, and we thank them for attending! We are lucky to have Dr. Virginia Hughson-Otte, AAWD past president, because she can really belt it out! She entertained us with the incredible gift she was given — her voice!

Congratulations to Dr. Trucia Drummond for receiving AAWD's highest honor, the Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award! Dr. Drummond was unable to attend the meeting. Dr. Barbara Mousel, AAWD past president, accepted the award on her behalf.
Not only did we have fun, but we also conducted business. We held our Board of Directors meeting and considered many important items, especially student member needs. One important and exciting item was a unanimous vote to encourage and support our student chapters. When students send in their applications and annual dues, $10 will be given back to the AAWD student chapter for each AAWD student member. Be sure to check out the student member news section in this issue of the Chronicle for details and rules for the rebate. The student dues received at the AAWD Headquarters office between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31 are counted toward the new year. Therefore, senior dental students who are members continue to enjoy full member benefits after they graduate until the end of the year — free!
AAWD hosted a breakfast on Sunday morning to thank our many sponsors. These wonderful sponsors included Sullivan-Schein Dental; Procter & Gamble; Dr. Forest Irons, of Forest Irons and Associates providing locum tenens services; Penn Security Bank & Trust; DentalWorkers.com; Patterson; and Dentsply. We look forward to a promising year with our sponsors!
At our all-day meeting on Saturday, "Creating Beauty for Our Patients and Ourselves," we had five exceptional speakers. Dr. Jaimee Morgan spoke to us on cosmetic dentistry and showed us a few examples of her many successful cases. Dr. Jenine Tanabe, a dermatologist from the San Francisco area, gave us insight on the many options available to us these days, including everything from Botox, collagen, and sclerotherapy to laser resurfacing, liposuction, and plastic surgery. During lunch Ms. Anthea Tolomei, from Tolomei and Associates, a style and fashion educator, helped us with our closet makeovers. She was fabulous! She gave us down-to-earth, easy ideas on how to dress "vertically"! Ms. Tolomei raffled off a free two-hour consultation, and Dr. Sandra Harris was the winner! In the afternoon, Procter and Gamble spoke to us about "The Science Behind Beauty Products" and took the mystery out of make-up. We were able to sample some of their newest products. We also heard the success story of Janice Hurley, who created her own professional image and taught many others to do the same through her successful practice-management company. These speakers were all wonderful, and we thank them for sharing their knowledge and expertise with us.
Dr. Jean Furuyama put the program together and selected each speaker very carefully so as not to duplicate other lectures and to specifically diversify the program toward the interests of women dentists.
We look forward to seeing you next year at our 83rd Annual American Association of Women Dentists Meeting in Anaheim, Calif., July 8-11, 2004! Don't miss it. You won't find these lectures at any other meeting!
