Looking for a paste with pumice, and quality online CE

Aug. 23, 2006
Readers search for a prophy paste with specific ingredients, as well as CE programs "without leaving my home."

Dear RDH eVillage

Help! I have been a hygienist for 34 years and use Sultan Prophy Powder, which contains pumice, bentonite, and calcium carbonate. The company has discontinued the product. Does anyone have a product like this? I am lost without it. I do not use the individual Nupro-type prophy paste. Please try to find this for me.

Thank you!

Sincerely yours,

Barbara

Dear Barbara,

Great question. Here is the reply from Thomas C. Simonton, senior scientist, Formulated Products-Dentsply Professional Division:

"I am not aware of any currently marketed prophy powder of the composition described above. In fact, I am wondering how destructive a pumice-containing powder was to her unit. We have tested pumice-containing powders, and they damage the nozzles quickly. Most all powders are sodium bicarbonate-based.

The non-bicarb powders are our ATH product, Jet Fresh, and KaVo's PROPHYpearls."

I have added the Web links for the mentioned products. I hope this is helpful!

CE GUIDE

Dear RDH eVillage:

Where can I get quality CE programs without leaving my home?

Thanks,
Sarah

Dear Sarah,

As you probably are already aware, each state practice act outlines the amount of self-study allowed per license renewal. So please check first with your state board of hygiene/dentistry before you embark on continuing education.

If you are a CE junkie like me and are always searching to increase your knowledge, log on to INeedCE.com. The course I am currently taking is Scaling and Root Planing: Case Acceptance and Practice Building.

The courses fit perfectly into my lifestyle, especially when I am traveling or spending too much time on the soccer fields. The Web site offers quality programs that are very cost-effective.
I have included some information about The Academy of Dental Therapeutics and Stomatology (ADTS)*, which develops the self-study courses.
*The Academy of Dental Therapeutics and Stomatology has been developing and publishing supervised self-study continuing dental education programs for dentists, hygienists, and assistants for the last eight years.

The ADTS is currently recognized by the ADA CERP and the AGD as an educational provider. This allows us to provide supervised continuing dental education to all dentists and hygienists in the United States, as well as other countries that recognize the ADA CERP and AGD programs. The ADTS is also authorized to provide continuing-education credits to dental assistants, licensed through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).
