Do you honor where you are in your purposeful life and professional career? I wish someone had given me permission to do this in the beginning of my career journey. So what does this mean?

It means that if you are beginning your dental and/or dental hygiene career; starting your own speaking, social media, marketing, sales, or consulting business; considering making a career transition; re-entering the workforce; and/or wherever you are with your career, stop comparing yourself to others who have hugely successful businesses or practices, and or appear on the cover of all the industry magazines, websites, and at conventions. If you are looking at people who have these lucrative practices, businesses or are the “key opinion leaders,” yet you are just getting started or making a career shift, again, please stop comparing yourself. Your inner guidance and your principled intentions are available to give you, your own unique career, and business plenty of ideas. These are your gifts so that you can and will show up and be the professional you are meant to be.

Many times professionals slow themselves down by trying to force the process and do too many things at once. A recent client began working with me because she was looking for a new position. She is a dental hygienist with a master’s degree, and she was having a hard time finding a job that she loved. She had spent time developing her resume and applying for positions. Although she had been on interviews and received job offers, the opportunities did not feel like a professional fit, and so she kept searching. What I helped her to do was to silence all of the “voices” telling her what she should do and take the time to understand her inner game, her ultimate career path, hone her professional intentions and learn how to attract those opportunities.

Do you ever find yourself spending time and energy sending resumes to every situation that “appears” exciting, ranging from local sales representative to manager of professional relations or a 3-day a week clinical position? How can the universe work in support of what you want when you are not clear on what you want and are so scattered in your approach?

So back to my client. By clarifying her true intentions and values while considering where she is in her professional career, she was able to gain clarity around which positions she should apply. We worked together on honing what career path she truly desired and aligned with your life purpose. She reworked her resume and job search modalities. At this time, she is remarkably calm about the types of positions she will dedicate her energy to, and she is beginning to identify the “shining jobs or opportunities” that distract her from her true path. I'm so proud of the changes she has made because she has backed up to honor where she is developmentally and professionally. She is not getting ahead of herself.

If you have never learned to authentically market yourself or if you have never clarified and solidified your life or career purpose and direction, now may be the time to learn some tools to help your professional roadmap. You can waste a lot of valuable time, energy, and money chasing other professionals’ careers and stay in a state of being overwhelmed when constantly chasing the next trendy thing or the “shining” new role or office. I encourage you to check in with your inner guidance system and honor where you are, because you are the only one that knows best what's next for you, your career, business, and life.
