British agency relaxes restrictions on dental personnel, including hygienists

The General Dental Council in the United Kingdom removes its barrier to direct access for some dental care professionals.

The General Dental Council in Great Britain removed barriers to dental professionals for rendering patient care without the prescription of the dentist. The ruling applied to dental hygienists, dental therapist, dental nurses, orthodontic therapists, clinical dental technicians, and dental technicians.

The GDC announced its decision after saying "patient safety" issues had been addressed.
