Henry Schein, Inc. was presented with the 2014 William J. Gies Award for Outstanding Achievement in the public or private partner category at a ceremony held recently during the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session & Exhibition. Selected by the ADEA and the Geis Foundation, the award recognized Henry Schein for its work to advance oral health and oral health education around the world.

IDEM Singapore 2014 record-breaking success
IDEM Singapore 2014 saw more than 500 exhibitors from 38 countries showcasing the latest innovations in clinical dentistry, dental technology and patient care across every segment of the dental market, covering restorative and preventive treatments, surgical procedures and equipment, orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics and laboratory tools. The IDEM Singapore trade fair was the largest staged at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre since it was refurbished, and the first ever to fill both floors of exhibition space covering 16,000 sqm. The trade fair and conference welcomed 7,842 participants from 61 countries over three and a half days.
ESRO the Swiss manufacturer of dental care products, at IDEM Singapore for the second time, had an excellent experience according to their general manager, Mr Patrick Sutter: “IDEM Singapore has been excellent for us. We came from Switzerland to build contacts in Asian markets,” he said. “e've made some good contacts and had some good conversations. Every contact and every discussion has been fruitful. We do not sell direct here from the fair so the results will be afterwards, but we are positive there will be good results. We will definitely consider coming back.”

Henry Schein, Inc. sponsored the eighth annual Senior Dental Leaders Programme held recently in London. Designed to develop high-level leadership and management capabilities in oral health leaders from around the globe, this year’s program gathered nearly 100 participants.
First conceptualized by Professor Raman Bedi, DDS, in 2007 at King’s College London, the Senior Dental Leaders Programme for 2014 was organized by the Global Child Dental Fund, King’s College London Dental Institute and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Delta Dental of New Jersey Invests in New Drug
Delta Dental of New Jersey has invested $5 million in C3 Jian, Inc. to support the company’s development of an antimicrobial drug that targets the bacteria responsible for tooth decay. It is one of several Delta Dental member companies and affiliated organizations that have made substantial investments in C3 Jian.
C3 Jian, Inc. is a private company focused on developing proprietary drugs with a focus on improving oral healthcare. Its lead product, called C16G2, is a proprietary peptide-based antimicrobial drug specifically targeting Streptococcus mutans, a bacterium responsible for dental caries, or tooth decay. Under a U.S. FDA Investigational New Drug Application, the company recently began a Phase 2 Clinical Trial to study C16G2 formulated as a mouth rinse, as well as a gel, for both dental tray and toothbrush applications.
“Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood, yet it’s nearly 100 percent preventable,” said Ronald Deblinger, DMD, chairman, Board of Trustees, Delta Dental of New Jersey. “This new treatment has the potential to help eradicate the disease and improve the oral health, and by connection the overall health, of people everywhere.”

Cantel Medical Corp., through its Crosstex subsidiary, has further expanded its sterility assurance monitoring business with the acquisition of Sterilator Company, Inc. Based in Cuba, N.Y., Sterilator Company is a high-quality manufacturer of biological indicators and supplies for sterility assurance products, which are used to accurately monitor the effectiveness of sterilization processes. Sterilator serves both the medical and industrial markets, and has been a long-time supplier of self-contained biological indicators, dual species spore strips and culture media to our dental and hospital healthcare disposable business.

LED Imaging Announces Partnership with Ray Co., Ltd., (Samsung)
LED Imaging, the new dental imaging division of LED Dental Ltd. announced recently that it is partnering with Ray Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Samsung, to sell, install, and provide support for the RAYSCAN α – Expert dental imaging system. The RAYSCAN α – Expert is a multi-function digital extraoral imaging system with 3-D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), panoramic, and cephalometric capabilities. Ray Co. is the first partner to join LED Imaging’s product portfolio since the company announced its expansion into the dental imaging category and emergent product offerings.

The RAYSCAN α – Expert’s 3D images are captured using an optimal 9 cm x 9 cm field of view, which is ideal for a wide variety of clinical applications. The system’s CMOS and Direct Deposition Cesium Iodide (CsI) Detector ensure practitioners can quickly capture high-quality, 16-bit DICOM images at a low radiation dose. To minimize error from patient positioning and movement, the system’s focal trough is stabilized and controlled through adaptive moving focus technology. The RAYSCAN α’s exclusive de-noising technology enhances image quality by removing noise that would otherwise blur the image.

Guardian Diversifies Dental Business with Strategic Acquisition
The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, a leading provider of employee benefits and one of the largest dental insurers in the United States, recently announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Premier Access Insurance Company, a provider of dental coverage and care to employers and individuals with more than 634,000 members.
The acquisition strengthens Guardian’s existing Dental Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO) network in several states, including California, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. It also extends Guardian’s reach into the state-run Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) markets, which are expected to grow significantly due to expanded eligibility under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Guardian will also gain a presence on six individual state exchanges, complementing its existing offering on 48 of the small business health (SHOP) exchanges.

It is the responsibility of insurers such as Guardian to deliver cost-effective, quality dental care to more Americans where and how they are looking to be served,” said Dong Ahn, executive vice president, Guardian. “Guardian’s acquisition of Premier Access demonstrates our commitment to maintaining our position as a leading dental company while expanding our reach to serve more customers who are seeking access to dental insurance through Medicaid and the exchanges.”
Premier Access has approximately 620 employees, serves over 5,000 employer plans and operates 18 dental centers. As part of Guardian, Premier Access customers will gain access to Guardian’s nationwide dental network. Premier’s exchange and government-funded program businesses will expand nationally. The company was founded in 1989 and is based in Sacramento, California.
LED Dental Inc. Announces New Dealer Agreement in the Southeast Region
LED Dental Inc. announced that it has entered into a non-exclusive partnership with Atlanta Dental Supply Company and Nashville Dental, Inc. for distribution of the Company’s VELscope Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment System and product line within the United States market.

Straumann and botiss team up to provide complete dental regeneration solutions worldwide
At the ITI World Symposium in Geneva, Straumann and botiss announced their intention to combine their strengths to provide complete oral tissue regeneration solutions to dental professionals worldwide.
According to an agreement between the two companies, Straumann will have exclusive rights to distribute botiss regenerative system products initially in most western and central European countries and the Americas, with co-distribution in Germany. At the same time, botiss will receive rights to distribute Straumann’s unique regenerative product Emdogain in Germany as well as in parts of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. In addition, Straumann has been granted a call option to acquire botiss’ shares, which, if exercised, could lead to a stake in the German company of up to 30 percent in 2017.
Based in Berlin, botiss biomaterials is Europe’s second largest supplier of oral tissue regeneration products. Eugenio Beltran, DMD, MPH, MS, DrPH, DABDPH, has accepted the position of the senior director, Center for Scientific Strategies & Information. Dr. Beltran will oversee activities of the Council on Scientific Affairs; identify emerging issues, assess and evaluate the scientific basis, clinical relevance, and member value for issues; and guide the programs of the ADA’s Science Institute, including the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry, Center for Product Evaluation, Professional Product Review under the Center for Scientific Information.
He comes from the CDC, where he served as the senior scientist and advisor to the director, Division of Oral Health. Most recently, he was responsible for collating the scientific evidence for CDC’s evaluation of recommendations for fluoride in drinking water for the U.S. Prior to the CDC, Dr. Beltran spent several years conducting research at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and School of Public Health and Institute for Social Research.
