DDS Lab recently announced its newest service that addresses the challenges of storing study models for orthodontic patients — OrthoVault. OrthoVault allows dentists and orthodontists to store their models securely online and access them at any time.
Traditionally, study models are created for each orthodontic patient out of fragile plaster and physically stored for a minimum of seven years. With OrthoVault, models or impressions are scanned to create a digital file that the practitioner can quickly and easily recall from OrthoVault's web portal 24 hours a day.
Are patient names on dental lab labels a HIPAA violation?
"We have found that the cost of storing large quantities of study models for many years as well as the challenge of locating models once they are placed in storage is a real problem for our customers," said Amy Ceresa, President of DDS Lab. "Additionally, these plaster study models are extremely breakable, putting them at great risk if they are ever dropped or mishandled. OrthoVault saves dentists and orthodontists time, money, and frustration, while guaranteeing the security of their records."
The key benefits of OrthoVault's online solution are the speed of delivery, the elimination of physical storage, the ability to recall any model 24-7 online, and the confidence that comes from knowing the records are safe and secure for years to come.
Dentists and orthodontists can be confident in the security of their files as OrthoVault meets all the security standards for HIPAA as well as the FDA. OrthoVault's files are stored securely in SSL-encrypted databases. The servers are regularly backed up to multiple locations to ensure the data is always preserved.

OrthoVault's digital study models are created by scanning rough models or impressions using state-of-the-art equipment. Once scanned, the models are perfected by expert technicians to create the finished file. Finished digital study model files are available in half the time of a traditional plaster study model.
OrthoVault files are available for download through a web portal, making it easy to find and retrieve models now and in the future. The digital study models are viewable using a free software program, OrthoViewer, which allows dentists and orthodontists to manipulate their models in three dimensions and make any necessary measurements. DDS Lab also offers three-dimensional printing of OrthoVault files to create a durable resin model should a dentist or orthodontist need a physical model.
OrthoVault's digital study model storage offers a convenient, easy-to-use solution for dentists and orthodontists struggling to manage the storage of traditional plaster study models. To learn more about this service, contact DDS Lab at 877-337-7800 or visit MyOrthoVault.com.
