Two sisters of Miriam Carey, the dental hygienist who was killed by gunfire from law enforcement officials after a brief chase in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 3, confirmed that Carey was winding down medical treatment for post-partum depression and related symptoms of psychosis during an interview with CNN.
But they did not confirm a boyfriend’s claim that Carey was delusional from schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder, which included reports that the Connecticut dental hygienist feared President Obama was monitoring her. The siblings reported a normal conclusion of treatment for post-partum depression and said there were no indications of a relapse during conversations with their sister.

A lawyer claiming to represent the family, Eric Sanders of New York City, posted on Facebook the following statement:
“First, I would like to thank everyone for your well wishes and offers of condolence. We especially would like to thank the worldwide media who patiently waited for the family to return back from the District of Columbia after completing the arduous task of identifying the body of their deceased sister, then providing a platform for them to briefly explain the life of Miriam I. Carey.
“This could not have occurred without the assistance of the NYPD, which kept the area traffic well managed respecting the rights of all parties to move freely about the area.
“In the coming days, weeks and months ahead, we are going to continue to press for answers as to the surrounding circumstances that lead [sic] the police to discharge their weapons... [sic]”
Facebook is also the location of a memorial community page for Carey. Although the moderator, a “friend,” requested comments that steered clear of “politics and hate speech,” many comments were critical of the final actions taken by the dental hygienist.
