Colgate is trying to patent caffeinated toothbrushes

May 17, 2013
Patent application recently became public

What? A caffeinated toothbrush? Not to mention a caffeinated tongue cleaner. How about a toothbrush that serves double duty as an appetite suppressant? Rich Abdill of motherboard.vice.com recently came across some intriguing news about Colgate — the company is working to patent all of these ideas.

According to the article, "A patent application that recently became public record reveals the Colgate-Palmolive Company is researching technology that would allow chemicals to be embedded into the heads of standard toothbrushes and slowly released during use.

"A three-month supply of caffeine could be embedded into the tongue-scraper on the back of a toothbrush, the application reads. So could doses of aspirin. Or benzocaine, for teething babies. Or, it expressly states, appetite suppressants. Colgate wants to patent a diet toothbrush."

According to an article by Christie Rizk on medicaldaily.com, "One iteration of the wonder toothbrush the company is planning, says the UK's Daily Mail, would have a built-in caffeine patch that could deliver the chemical through the toothbrush bristles and into the gums, cheeks, and tongue as you brush your teeth. In its patent application, Colgate-Palmolive says it could even deliver chemicals that produce a sensory effect, like capsaicin, a flavor, or even medication, pain killers, or appetite suppressants."
